What’s the functionality you’d wish you could add to your WordPress landing page? A contact form after your recent posts? Or a carousel with your cheapest products followed by a review section?
There are a lot of great looking themes out there. But if you want to do anything beyond what’s been pre-designed, you’ll usually bump into restrictions.
The restrictions could be about how many sections in your one page website you can add, or how your recent posts are going to be displayed on your front page. You’ve probably been there.
I found the easiest way around this problem is to simply design my own landing pages.
It’s easy to do, even without any coding knowledge. The answer is a solid theme, such as Sydney, in combination with a page builder plugin, such as the SiteOrigin Page Builder.
When planning a new website, I like to choose a theme that gives me as much freedom as possible. Some of the things I look for are:
I think Sydney is a great theme because it meets all of above criteria. It’s responsive, has numerous design options and offers a full width page template. Other themes do the job too though, so browse till you find the one you like the most.
Install your favourite page builder. If you choose to use SiteOrigin Page Builder, your design options are greatly improved if you also install the SiteOrigin Widgets Bundle and the Livemesh SiteOrigin Widgets. They give you lots of cool ways to display your content.
PRO TIP: The Livemesh SiteOrigin Widgets contain a lot of widgets, so the authors have disabled most of them per default. To enable them all, or choose which ones you would like to use, click the Livemesh Widgets button at the bottom of the black left bar on your WordPress dashboard panel. This takes you to a settings page. Go to the bottom of the page click the “Activate all plugin widgets”. Remember to save your changes.
It’s time to start designing your landing page. Go to your front page and change the page template from “Default” to either “Full width.” Note that the name of the page templates will vary from theme to theme, but always go for the one that has the words full width in it (if you do want a full width landing page of course. Otherwise skip this step).
At the top right of your page editor you will find three buttons called Visual, Text and Page Builder. Click on Page Builder.
Now you will be able to add sections in your page. You can also choose prebuilt templates. I would advise you to try to add different sections and try the plugins out so you get a feel for how it all works and what the plugins can do.
The good thing about the Page Builder is that you can make your page as long or short as you want, and you have full control over the sections.
